Department of Parasitology, Mycology and Environmental Microbiology

Head of the department is Antonio Barragan The number of parasite diseases globally has markedly increased during the 1980s and 1990s. Malaria, schistosomiasis, giardiasis, and amoebiasis are a few of the most common parasite diseases. In Sweden, the parasite diseases are common in patients with impaired immune defence, but also travellers returning from the tropics and immigrants are known risk groups.

The task of the Department of Parasitology is to watch for, and analyse, disease control and infectious parasitological cases, and to develop new diagnostic methods. Commissioned by the clinical microbiology laboratories, the County medical officers of communicable disease control and infectious disease specialists, the Department performs special diagnostics in parasitology. The work at the Department is done in close collaboration with parasitology laboratories in Europe, the USA, Africa, Latin America, and Asia.
